The Lycra-clad Pink Guy, famous for his “Harlem Shake” antics, ranks among the best-known creations of biracial Japanese-Australian comedian and musician George “Joji” Miller, widely recognized online as Filthy Frank. Miller launched his web comedy series, The Filthy Frank Show, in 2011, and the program, along with characters such as Pink Guy, eventually attracted more than four million subscribers. The productions broke into mainstream awareness in early 2013 after footage of Pink Guy and his companions dancing to Baauer’s EDM cut “Harlem Shake” spread rapidly and ignited one of that year’s most pervasive internet memes. Capitalizing on the sudden attention, Miller issued the 2014 self-titled Pink Guy album, a collection of popular sketches. Pink Guy’s next project, Pink Season, arrived in 2016 and, buoyed by an existing audience, topped download rankings while reaching number 76 on the Billboard 200. Miller wrote the songs, with production handled by Josh Pan, RyanJacob, and Holder; the material leaned chiefly toward trap rap yet also incorporated ukulele pieces and downtempo electronic textures that echoed the more introspective style Miller adopts as Joji. Though frequently tasteless, offensive, and sophomoric, Pink Season showcased Miller’s satirical edge through sharp commentary on race, politics, and culture.
