The British metalcore group Rise to Remain originated under the name Halide, with Austin Dickinson, Ben Tovey, and Will Homer establishing the project together in late 2006. At first the members treated it strictly as a side endeavor while maintaining commitments to other British bands. Halide nevertheless developed a following in the London area through an independently issued EP and relentless live appearances. An opening slot at the 2008 Download Festival prompted the name change to Rise to Remain, after which the band intensified its touring pace and shared bills across England with Shadows Fall, Five Finger Death Punch, and Trivium. Recording activity persisted as well, yielding the Becoming One EP before the year ended and the subsequent Bridges Will Burn EP, issued via Metal Hammer in 2010. Following a support run with Iron Maiden on one portion of the veteran band’s 2011 world tour, Rise to Remain secured a deal with EMI. Its first full-length album, City of Vultures, arrived that September, drawing favorable critical notices and entering the Top Five of the U.K. rock charts.
