Originating from Statesville, North Carolina, in a devout Southern Baptist household, Rockie Lynne acquired his first guitar at twelve. Not long after beginning high school he performed regularly in jazz ensembles and other groups. Following graduation he enlisted in the Army and served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg. His commitment to music remained undiminished, so once his military obligation ended he moved to California and studied at the Guitar Institute of Technology under the G.I. Bill. Unable to land a recording contract, he relocated to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where he soon joined tours with local musician Mike Shane. When Shane headed to Nashville in the early 1990s, Lynne followed. He earned a living supporting country artists such as the McCarter Sisters and Noel Haggard, though his goal was always to present his own material. Leaving Nashville behind, he traveled independently and sold his self-produced CDs until he settled in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, and built a devoted regional audience. Bruce Larson of Warner Bros. caught one of Lynne’s sets at a neighborhood restaurant and was struck by his command of the crowd. Larson arranged a house performance, after which a copy of the CD reached Universal. The label signed him to its Nashville-based Universal South imprint, which issued his self-titled debut album in 2006.
