Portland, OR-based singer/songwriter Sarah Dougher performed with the Lookers, The Crabs, and Cadallaca, the last of which also includes Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker. She earned a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, instructs courses on Greek and Roman literature, and contributes articles to Willamette Week, San Francisco Bay Guardian, and additional outlets. With artist Nikki McClure she authored the book Sent Out On The Tracks They Built: Sinophobia in Olympia, 1886, which examines racism and railroad construction in Olympia, WA. Her first solo release, the personal and political album Day One, came out in 1999 on K Records. Walls Ablaze, her follow-up and debut on Mr. Lady Records, surfaced in spring 2000, after which she toured England, Japan, and the eastern U.S. In January 2001 she and collaborator Jon Reuter completed a month-long residency at New York City’s Knitting Factory; every performance sold out and drew notice from The New Yorker, The New York Times, and The Village Voice. As a founder of the Ladyfest festival, Dougher appeared at Ladyfest Glasgow in summer 2001 shortly before releasing her third studio album, The Bluff.
