Biography
With her supple, deeply expressive vocals, SAYGRACE—born Grace Sewell—channels a potent Amy Winehouse-inspired retro-modern R&B approach. A reimagined version of Lesley Gore’s “You Don't Own Me,” featuring G-Eazy, topped the Australian charts and paved the way for her first full-length project, 2016’s FMA, which reached the Top 40 in both her homeland and the United States. Subsequent output included the 2020 EP The Defining Moments of SAYGRACE: Girlhood, Fuckboys & Situationships, followed by 2023 dance collaborations “No Saving Us” with Two Friends and “Beggin’ You” with Hayden James; she reclaimed a sultry, soul-driven sound on the independent 2024 single “twentyfourseven.”
Born and raised in suburban Brisbane, Sewell grew up in a musical household—her grandparents worked professionally as musicians—while her older brother Conrad Sewell has also achieved success as a songwriter and performer. At 18 she signed with RCA Records in 2015, initially billed simply as Grace, and issued the Memo EP, whose lead track “You Don't Own Me” was co-produced by Quincy Jones and Parker Ighile. The liberally refreshed take on the 1963 Lesley Gore original added new lyrics from G-Eazy and earned millions of streams after reaching number one in Australia; its placement on the Suicide Squad soundtrack additionally earned a Grammy nomination for Best Compilation Album. FMA—“Forgive My Attitude”—arrived in July 2016, later peaking at number 34 on the Billboard 200, 42 in the U.K., and 32 in Australia, while Memo itself entered the lower half of the Billboard 200.
She resurfaced in 2017 as a featured vocalist alongside Lil Yachty on DJ Cassidy’s “Honor.” Adopting the stylized name SAYGRACE, she issued “Boys Ain’t Shit” in 2019; the track later appeared on the 2020 EP The Defining Moments of SAYGRACE: Girlhood, Fuckboys & Situationships and charted in Ireland, spawning reworked versions with Becky G, Tate McRae, and Flo Milli. Further standalone releases arrived in the form of the solo cut “Used To” (2020) and the 2021 collaboration “If There Really Is a God” with Femme It Forward. In 2023 she contributed to the dance single “No Saving Us” by Two Friends and appeared on Hayden James’s club track “Beggin’ You.”
After composing hundreds of songs, Sewell unveiled her first self-written material in three years with the early-2024 single “twentyfourseven.”
