Biography
Hailing from Toronto, Scott Helman emerged as a pop singer-songwriter during his mid-teen years. A guitar arrived as a present on his tenth birthday, prompting him to commit to music several years afterward. At fifteen he auditioned before label executives and secured a development contract with Warner Music Canada, which arranged co-writing sessions alongside Simon Wilcox and Tawgs Salter. After finishing high school in 2013, he issued the three-track EP Songs for Friends in mid-2014, shortly ahead of his first official single, “Bungalow.” The track appeared on the seven-song EP Augusta, released that October, and reached the Top 40 on the Canadian Hot 100. Soon afterward he joined Walk Off the Earth as an opening act for their 2015 North American and European dates. In 2016 he delivered a live rendition of “Bungalow” during the Juno Awards telecast and earned nominations for Breakthrough Artist of the Year as well as Pop Album of the Year. His debut full-length, Hôtel de Ville, arrived in 2017 and featured the singles “Sweet Tooth,” “21 Days,” and “Kinda Complicated.” Throughout 2018 he supported Vance Joy on tour and unveiled the three-song EP Hang Ups. Two further singles followed in 2019—“Everything Sucks,” addressing bleak circumstances, and “EVERGREEN,” confronting climate change.
