Secret Lives of the Freemasons came together in 2003 after two local groups, A Kiss Before Dying and Throwing Myself, disbanded. The Asheville, NC, sextet fused post-hardcore and emo with an intensity that recalled acts such as Glassjaw, and its lineup featured vocalist Brien Worsham, bassist Josh Carden, drummer Travis Moss, and guitarists Jim Debardi, Tucker Ensley, and Justin Elrod. In mid-2004 the members traveled to New Jersey for a meeting with the independent label Astro Magnetics, which signed them immediately. Their first album, This Was Built to Make You Dance (Here Is Your Revolution), was tracked in only four days under producer D. James Goodwin of Murder by Death and appeared in spring 2005. Throughout the following year they maintained a full schedule of shows alongside Scary Kids Scaring Kids, He Is Legend, and the Fully Down.
