John Selway ranks among the East Coast’s most forward-thinking techno creators, crafting tracks that erase stylistic borders and draw interest from both hardcore techno DJs and dedicated trance audiences. Long before Swedish tech-house specialist Christian Smith propelled him to worldwide recognition, the Washington, D.C.-area native had already developed into a classically trained violinist who immersed himself in the region’s nascent rave culture as a teenager. Those formative encounters with techno solidified his resolve to produce electronic dance music, culminating in a debut release issued in 1991 when he was only seventeen. After enrolling at a college in upstate New York, he soon gravitated toward Manhattan, where he rapidly established himself as both a prolific studio artist and an in-demand club DJ.
