Slow Hollows

Slow Hollows represents the shrewd and ever-shifting indie rock endeavor led by Los Angeles artist Austin Anderson, who issued multiple prominent recordings during the mid-2010s while still attending high school. From the sharp, lo-fi garage punk characterizing his initial output to the more reflective new wave character of Romantic in 2016, Anderson displayed a knack for rapidly internalizing and reshaping diverse elements of pop across successive projects. In its formative years the endeavor functioned chiefly as a collective, yet Anderson revived Slow Hollows as a solo vehicle in 2024 through the release of Bullhead, his most contemplative and understated album to date.

Anderson first recorded under the Hollows name, issuing the compact lo-fi cassette I'm Just as Bad as You Are in January 2014 as the frontman of a trio completed by bassist Jamie Atkinson and drummer Nick Santana. Moving toward a gloomier atmosphere and projecting maturity through his subdued, laconic vocal approach, Anderson and his associates delivered Atelophobia in June 2015 on the artist-operated Danger Collective imprint. By 2016 Anderson had established local connections and, ahead of the next Slow Hollows recording, participated in several notable collaborations, contributing to tracks by Tyler, The Creator and Frank Ocean while also undertaking modeling assignments for Yves Saint Laurent. Issued at the close of that year, when the vocalist was merely 18, Romantic marked another pivot as horns entered the mix alongside gentler new wave and dream pop hues, supported by an entirely fresh rhythm section that included bassist Aaron Jassenoff, drummer Jackson Katz, and trumpeter Daniel Fox. The 2019 album Actors extended this trajectory with its rich, atmospheric production.

After the collective disbanded in 2020, Anderson persisted in composing independently. Because Slow Hollows had originated as his personal vision during adolescence, he chose to retain the name for his solo work. The resulting Bullhead appeared in early 2024 as the first statement of this new phase, arriving five years after his prior effort.
