Formed in 2012 at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, the indie pop outfit initially known as SPORTS later settled in Philadelphia and rebranded as Remember Sports in 2018 after issuing two albums under its original name. The ensemble fuses the melodic, conversational singing of chief songwriter Carmen Perry with a '90s lo-fi sensibility that yields an easygoing, jangly character. The founding lineup featured Perry on lead vocals and guitar, Catherine Dwyer on guitar, James Karlin on bass, and Benji Dossetter on drums. Their first album, Sunchokes, appeared in spring 2014. Guitarist Jack Washburn joined soon afterward, and the resulting quintet secured a deal with Father/Daughter Records that brought forth the 2015 sophomore release All of Something, tracked in Philadelphia with producer and musician Kyle Gilbride of Waxahatchee and Girlpool. The band had already relocated to Philly by the time it issued a split single with San Francisco's Plush in 2017. In 2018, Dwyer moved to bass and Connor Perry replaced Dossetter on drums; under the new name Remember Sports, the group delivered its third album, Slow Buzz, that May, recorded in upstate New York by Evan M. Marré, also known as Russel the Leaf.
