Biography
Spooky Mansion secured a foothold in Los Angeles’ indie underground toward the end of the 2010s by fusing surf rock, psychedelia, and melodic indie pop in distinctive ways. Their first album, Alright, arrived in 2018 and laid out the foundational sound, while later releases—The Curse in 2021 and What About You? in 2024—broadened the palette with cosmic country, ’70s rock, and jazz inflections.
Grayson Converse launched the project in San Francisco during the mid-2010s, issuing a self-titled EP before shifting the band to Los Angeles in 2018, where Alright appeared on the independent Sandyams label. The Curse followed in 2021, tracked inside a San Francisco artist commune that had once served as a U.S. Navy repair station. More forceful and compact than the debut, the record drew favorable reviews and widened the group’s audience. Between full-lengths they maintained a steady output of singles, among them the buoyant “Bad Bet” in 2022 and “I Want You,” a 2023 collaboration with iDA HAWK. On What About You? the ensemble extended its range further, delivering a jangly Americana flavor accented by jazz touches.
