Smut constructs guitar-centered indie rock that pulls equally from shoegaze textures and 1990s alternative traditions, merging dense six-string noise with melodic lines that bend in unexpected yet playful directions. Frontwoman Tay Roebuck supplies performances with a charged presence and jagged charisma that meshes with the forceful playing of guitarists Andrew Min and Sam Ruschman, allowing the songs to balance their raw sonic edge against a more openly emotional dimension. The group’s signature approach first took shape on the 2017 cassette End of Sam-soon and reached fuller realization on their debut album, 2022’s How the Light Felt.

Andrew Min founded Smut in Cincinnati, Ohio during the mid-2010s after his previous band dissolved, prompting him to seek new songwriting and performance opportunities within a few months. He invited his girlfriend Tay Roebuck to collaborate, recognizing her outspoken perspective as ideal for shaping lyrics and delivering lead vocals. Following a handful of early demos, the pair added bassist Sam Ruschman, and with drummer Leo Kessler IV completing the lineup they issued the five-song EP Purse on the local Torn Light label in 2014. An eight-song limited cassette, End of Sam-soon, appeared in 2016. Around this period Bell Cenower, then performing in what she described as “this really terrible, god-awful band,” caught the attention of Roebuck, Min, and Ruschman, who invited her to join. Cenower assumed bass and keyboard duties, shifting Ruschman to second guitar while Harold Bon replaced Leo Kessler IV on drums. The band began touring, headlining intimate shows and appearing alongside Bully, Swirlies, and Nothing.

The three-song vinyl EP Power Fantasy arrived in 2020. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic’s restrictions on live performance, Smut relocated from Ohio to Chicago, Illinois, using stimulus checks to fund the move. Once settled in the Windy City they started composing their first full-length record, and drummer Aidan O’Connor’s arrival helped develop a denser, more aggressive sound. Resuming touring, they supported Wavves on several dates, refining their material ahead of recording. Bayonet Records released How the Light Felt in November 2022, after which the group returned to the road.
