Biography
Hailing from San Francisco, the cerebral indie pop outfit Social Studies revolves around vocalist and keyboardist Natalia Rogovin together with drummer Michael Jirkovsky. Born in Oregon and schooled in classical piano, Rogovin joined forces with Jirkovsky, whose formative years unfolded amid Chicago punk ensembles, after the pair connected as college students in Santa Cruz, California; they established the group upon settling in San Francisco several years afterward. The ensemble tracked its opening EP, This Is the World’s Biggest Hammer, during 2007 before stabilizing its once-fluid roster by enlisting bassist Jesse Hudson and guitarist Tom Smith, whose résumé also includes stints with the Chicago pop acts Office and Mazes. Social Studies devoted 2009 to laying down its inaugural long-player, Wind Up Wooden Heart, which surfaced the following year through Antenna Farm Records.
