Soulfarm, which began life under the name Inasense, came together in New York in 1991 as a roots-oriented pop-rock ensemble whose sound pulls from country and global traditions yet often recalls the feel of 1970s California groups. Guitarist C. Lanzbom and lead singer Noah Solomon Chase first crossed paths in Jerusalem during the 1980s. At that time Lanzbom was instructing music locally, and one of his pupils was Chase, already active in the Jerusalem band Noah’s Ark. Once the pair began performing together in Israel, they relocated to New York and launched Inasense in 1991, taking care not to be mistaken for the R&B act Innocence. While based in the city they connected with session drummer Mark Ambrosino, who entered the lineup in 1995. The band’s debut, the self-titled Inasense album, appeared on Ripe & Ready in 1996; The Ride on Orchard followed, and Get Your Shinebox arrived on Desert Rock in 1999. In 2000 the group adopted the name Soulfarm, issuing its first live recording, Live at Wetlands, through Phoenix Presents the same year. Scream at the Crop reached listeners in spring 2001.
