South Normal

South Normal originated in Chelsea, Michigan, where explosive vocals from Nathan Mackinder anchored the group. Drummer Shannon Boone, bassist Jeremy Mackinder, and guitarists Ben Vermeylen and Jason Schaller completed the five-piece lineup. Drawing from classic rock alongside radio-ready indie rock, the quintet delivered an energetic, melodic style that registered strongly from its earliest performances. Following a pair of independent releases, the critically-acclaimed Emotion Picture arrived in 2001 and expanded the band’s big sound to wider listeners. Its successor, Book of Matches, emerged after an extended studio effort guided by legendary producer Michael Lutz, carrying the group past its Midwestern roots. In 2004 Deluxe Records issued the band’s first live DVD, Nowhere To Be Found, which captured performances filmed in Detroit, Michigan.
