Born Jonathan Carle in 1988 in Washington D.C., the rapper known as Spodee and SuperSpodee later settled in Atlanta, where he began carving out space in the city’s hip-hop scene toward the close of the 2000s through scattered singles and appearances on other artists’ recordings. His emerging sound eventually drew the attention of rap superstar T.I., resulting in a 2009 signing to the Grand Hustle imprint. Early the following year he issued the No Pressure mixtape, then continued issuing a succession of increasingly refined projects, among them 2014’s The B.I.D. By 2015 Spodee had parted ways with Grand Hustle, citing a sense of creative constraint under the label; his public comments on the matter sparked visible tension with T.I. Operating on his own thereafter, he put out a run of independent mixtapes that included the Trench Muzik series that same year, followed in 2016 by The B.I.D. II: The New Testament and Out Tha Mudd, Vol. 1.
