While references to "organic" in hardcore party rap usually point to the cultivation practices behind marijuana, East Bay California's Starting Six represents one of the few acts in that world whose climb occurred through truly natural circumstances. Earlier, beat-making with professional goals had been limited to Nic Nac and Big Steve alone, yet linking up with longtime friends and regular party companions Goose, Bread, Riggz, and Fess led them to record "Thirsty" simply to publicize an upcoming gathering for relatives and acquaintances, after which online circulation took over. Shared links produced 10,000 views inside a week, with the count then advancing through the hundreds of thousands before surpassing the one-million threshold, at which point the group adopted the name Starting Six to begin fielding the performance offers that arrived. They issued their debut official mixtape, Let's Talk About Six, in 2011. A relocation to Los Angeles came next, followed by the 2012 release of On Yo Beach.
