Biography
Sturm und Drang stands as a prominent Finnish heavy metal act that came together in 2004. André Linman, handling guitar and vocals, joined forces with Henrik Kurkiala on bass and background vocals—both friends—right after attending a Judas Priest show. They promptly recruited Jesper Wahlroos on keyboards, Calle Fahllund behind the drums, and Alexander Ivars on guitar. The young musicians, aged 13 and 14, began performing a mix of their own compositions and covers in public shortly thereafter. Their sound drew from classic hard rock and metal outfits such as Dio and Bon Jovi, alongside contemporary melodic metal groups like Arctica Sonata.
Following a series of appearances at festivals and intimate spots, the band captured a demo during autumn 2005. Helsinki Music Company took notice, ultimately inking a deal after witnessing the group share the stage with the Swedish garage rock outfit the Hellacopters. In 2006, they laid down their debut album, Learning to Rock, which upon its May 2007 launch climbed swiftly to the third spot on Finnish charts. The track "Rising Son" reached the ninth position as a single. GUN Records put out the album throughout Europe come August 2007, including an expanded version that incorporated a Judas Priest cover along with additional bonuses.
