Biography
Sub Urban crafts a brooding strain of EDM-tinged pop built around unsettling instrumentals and spectral, airy vocals. The New Jersey solo project channeled motifs of seclusion and dreamlike dread across the 2019 chart-topping single “Cradles” and the 2020 release “Freak,” the latter featuring Rei Ami and appearing on the debut EP Thrill Seeker; the artist’s first album-length statement, Hive, arrived in 2022.
Born Danny Maisonneuve in 1999 and raised in New Jersey, the musician learned production techniques independently before starting to construct original beats. The resulting Sub Urban aesthetic merged EDM low-end weight, rock-derived arrangements, and Maisonneuve’s own emotionally distant singing style. Early collaborations with DNMO surfaced on a handful of tracks in 2017 and 2018, yet broader attention arrived with the 2019 single “Cradles,” whose eerie mood and novel music-box sampling quickly amassed millions of streams while its video accumulated more than 100 million views. That same year brought the follow-up single “Isolate.” March 2020 saw the seven-track EP Thrill Seeker, which included Rei Ami’s vocal on the opening cut “Freak.” The next twelve months yielded the singles “Patchwerk,” featuring Two Feet, and “Inferno,” the latter later included on the stylistically restless, full-length debut Hive, issued in 2022.
