Biography
The pop ensemble Superfood, based in Birmingham, England, features Dominic Ganderton on vocals and guitar, Ryan Malcolm also on vocals and guitar, Emily Baker handling bass, and Carl Griffin at the drums. Their sound fuses lively vocal lines and whimsical words with guitars steeped in Brit-pop alongside percussion drawn from garage rock. While Ganderton handled production duties for other Midlands groups including Peace and Swim Deep, he simultaneously developed his own songwriting. Seeking a band to bring these pieces to the stage, he assembled Superfood in late 2012 alongside Malcolm, Baker, and Griffin, whom he had first encountered amid the local weekend social circuit two years earlier.
After stockpiling several tracks, the quartet issued its debut EP, MAM, in 2013. The same year saw the group enter the live circuit, where a slot at Brighton's Great Escape Festival spurred audience growth and paved the way for a support date in Paris with the American pop outfit Fun. Infectious then signed the band, resulting in the release of their first full-length, Don't Say That, toward the end of 2014. Reviewers responded favorably, with some drawing parallels between the group's approach and that of Beck or Arctic Monkeys during the AM era. A European tour followed to promote the album before the musicians returned to the studio.
Superfood next aligned with Dirty Hit for the 2017 sophomore release Bambino. That effort employed more refined production approaches than its predecessor and spotlighted the anthemic singles "Unstoppable" and "I Can't See." The band also toured alongside labelmates Pale Waves and King Nun throughout 2017.
