Surfbort came together in Brooklyn during 2014 as a raw, abrasive punk unit whose rowdy stage shows and confrontational clips quickly attracted both listeners and press attention. Dani Miller launched the group as its frontwoman and chose the name in tribute to a Beyoncé phrase. Early instability marked the lineup until the roster locked in with David Head on guitar, Alex Kilgore on bass, and Sean Powell on drums. The band’s first release, the R.I.P. Die Old EP, arrived in 2014, followed by a limited-edition 7" single and the 2017 EP The Bort of Death. Opening appearances alongside Thee Oh Sees, Fat White Family, and Hinds preceded a signing to Julian Casablancas’ Cult Records. In 2018 the label issued the band’s debut album, Friendship Music, recorded with producers Jonathan Schenke (Parquet Courts, the Drums) and Chad Ubovich of Meatbodies. Once the record was out, Surfbort joined Black Lips and Iceage for a run of live dates promoting the LP.
