THALA merges a gentle, ethereal singing style with influences from the 1990s that blend dream pop, shoegaze, and grunge elements. Her first album, adolescence, which came out in 2021, featured expansive, ethereal soundscapes. By 2023, she shifted toward a denser and more clashing sonic approach on the EP In Theory Depression.

Originating from Berlin where she grew up, THALA learned guitar on her own and began performing on the streets and at open mic nights starting in 2019. She crafted an intoxicating, immersive style drawing from dream pop and shoegaze to complement her soft vocals, which soon drew interest from record companies, leading to a deal with Duchess Box Records in Berlin before 2021. The label issued her first single, the longing and echo-laden "moonlight shadows," in August 2020. Shortly after, her atmospheric track "something in the water" with Bearcubs from November gained some viral traction. Over the following year, additional dreamy releases appeared, culminating in the September 2021 album adolescence. THALA expanded her reach through a featured appearance on BILBAO's track "Slow It Down," which drew millions of streams throughout 2022. She also teamed up with Luke Noa that same year on the song "21."

Fire Records then took notice and inked a contract with THALA to support the bolder, grunge-tinged material featured on the In Theory Depression EP from July 2023.
