Biography
The Bros. Landreth formed as a Canadian roots-rock quintet whose style fuses harmony-laden Americana with blues-inflected R&B, draws on classic American singer-songwriter forms, and reflects the folk traditions of the northern prairies. Dave and Joey Landreth spent their earliest years surrounded by music; their father Wally, a respected Winnipeg performer and composer frequently hired to support visiting artists such as Amos Garrett, regularly brought the infants in a bassinet to his club dates. Their mother’s record shelves, stocked with albums by Bonnie Raitt, Little Feat, Ry Cooder, Lyle Lovett, and John Hiatt, shaped the brothers’ tastes during adolescence. Determined from an early age to lead their own group, the siblings spent their late teens and early twenties backing other acts before uniting in their twenties. The lineup also features drummer Ryan Voth and guitarist Ariel Posen; all four members contribute vocals.
Produced by Murray Pulver, the band’s first album, Let It Lie, appeared on Audio & Video Labs in Canada in late 2013 and included the track “I Am a Fool,” written and sung by their father. Strong reviews quickly followed, leading to radio and television appearances as well as extensive live work. Throughout 2014 the group maintained a near-constant touring schedule across Canada and selected U.S. cities, generating notable attention with their performance at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. Shortly afterward, Slate Creek Records licensed the album for an American release in early 2015.
