Biography
Blending punk's raw drive with pop's sugary melodies, The Dollyrots deftly weave boisterous clamor and bright tunefulness. Their bright, memorable tracks go down easily, while records such as 2010's A Little Messed Up, 2017's Whiplash Splash, and 2019's Daydream Explosion highlight a polished, radio-friendly strain of punk-pop that has placed their material in countless ads and television programs. The band keeps a busy touring schedule and sustains the punk-pop tradition, issuing their ninth studio album, Night Owls, in 2023.
Ogden and Cabezas launched the project while attending the New College of Florida in the late '90s. Originally called No Chef, the early lineup featured bassist/lead vocalist Josh Harrold and drummer Mike Benbow; the endeavor began as casual fun until Ogden and Cabezas chose to pursue it seriously. Harrold departed soon afterward, after which Ogden assumed lead vocal duties. Benbow exited next and was succeeded by Frank Beasley. This lineup adopted the name the Dollyrots and departed Florida in 2001 seeking a fresh base. Following an extended drive, they landed in Los Angeles and began performing immediately. After Beasley was replaced by Josh Valenti, the band cut their debut EP, Feed Me Pet Me, and issued it independently in 2003.
They soon connected with producer John Fields and entered the studio to track their first full-length, Eat Your Heart Out. After an initial self-release, Panic Button, operating beneath the Lookout umbrella, acquired the album. Valenti had already exited by its July 2004 street date, with Amy Wood stepping in. The Dollyrots spent the ensuing two years largely on the road, including a Warped Tour run. During breaks they began shaping a follow-up, yet Lookout's closure interrupted the process. Joan Jett, already an admirer, stepped forward and signed them to her Blackheart imprint. Produced by Jacques Wait and Fields, Because I'm Awesome appeared on Blackheart in March 2007. The group promoted it with nonstop touring and surfaced in varied outlets, cutting a version of Jett's "Bad Reputation" for the Endless Bummer soundtrack, portraying themselves on the series Greek, and filming a Kohl's commercial.
Their next album was tracked in 2009, with Cabezas assuming production responsibilities for the first time. A Little Messed Up arrived in 2010 and found the band incorporating additional pop ingredients while collaborating with outside writers. After parting ways with Blackheart they issued an EP on their own Arrested Youth label. Continuing the independent route, they turned to Kickstarter, where a highly successful campaign financed 2012's The Dollyrots. Reuniting with Fields, the record marked the first occasion Ogden and Cabezas handled nearly every instrumental part themselves, aside from a handful of contributions from Fields, and retained complete creative control. They toured extensively afterward until Ogden's pregnancy paused live activity. Recording nonetheless continued, yielding 2014's Barefoot and Pregnant, cut during her pregnancy; the album earned strong reviews and peaked at number seven on Billboard's Heatseekers chart.
The all-acoustic Love Songs, Werewolves, and Zombies surfaced digitally in 2013 for PledgeMusic backers before receiving a wider release the next year. The Dollyrots kept using PledgeMusic to underwrite projects, issuing their first live set in 2016, the expansive double-disc/DVD package Family Vacation: Live in Los Angeles. Also that year came the three-song EP Mama's Gonna Knock You Out. By year's end the couple was simultaneously expecting another child and preparing new music. Their daughter arrived in November, followed by the John Fields-produced Whiplash Splash in early 2017.
With drummer Rikki Styxx, onboard since 2014, the Dollyrots maintained their touring and family commitments before returning to the studio. They debuted on Wicked Cool Records with the single "Get Radical," then delivered their eighth studio album, Daydream Explosion, in 2019. 2022 brought the retrospective Down the Rabbit Hole, gathering rarities, B-sides, and covers. The busy duo sustained their output in 2023 with Night Owls, their ninth long-player, a burst of exuberant pop-punk and high-energy rock & roll.
