Christian Büttner, who grew up in Göttingen, Germany, works in electronic music under the alias TheFatRat and has functioned as a producer, songwriter, and engineer since the early 2000s. His sound moves across euphoric progressive house, trap, and glitch-hop while drawing heavily on video game music. YouTube has become his primary outlet, especially within the gaming community, where he maintains more than a million followers and actively invites listeners to feature his tracks in their own videos. He first adopted the name TheFatRat in 2011, when his earliest singles took the form of upbeat, bass-driven electro-house. He soon expanded into dozens of remixes and mash-ups while continuing to issue original material that shifted across styles yet consistently displayed dramatic gestures alongside sugary melodies. Standout originals include “Unity,” “Time Lapse,” and “Monody,” the last of which features vocalist Laura Brehm. His first major-label EP, Jackpot, appeared on Casablanca in late 2016.
