Tino Casal stood among the flashiest singers to surface in Spanish pop, where his dual impact on music and visual art helped shape the cultural surge known as La Movida Madrileña during the 1980s. José Celestino Casal Álvarez entered the world in Oviedo in 1950 and launched his path by leading Los Zafiros Negros and Los Archiduques, sustaining a simultaneous commitment to painting and glam rock across the entire decade that followed. A short association with the Philips label preceded his production work for the trailblazing Spanish heavy metal act Obús. In 1981 he issued his debut album Neocasal, whose chart-topping single “Champu de Huevo” announced his arrival. Etiqueta Negra appeared in 1983 and Hielo Rojo in 1984, yet an untreated ankle sprain escalated into a severe leg infection that confined him to intensive care for nineteen days and stalled his momentum. He returned with the covers-dominated Lagrimas de Cocodrilo in 1987 and closed his studio output with the 1989 release Histeria before dying at age 41 in a car crash.
