Electronic duo TV Rock notched one of 2006’s most prominent Australian pop successes through their breakthrough single “Flaunt It,” which ascended to the top of the national charts. Long before they joined forces under the TV Rock name, DJs and producers Grant Smillie and Ivan Gough had each established themselves as leading figures in the club scene. Smillie held the resident slot at Melbourne’s influential One Love venue, assembled a mix for the respected Ministry of Sound collection, and presented the long-running Nova FM program Overdrive, whereas Gough earned recognition as the most active remixer in Australian dance history, highlighted by the 1997 underground favorite “Summer Breeze” and an extended residency at Room680 in Melbourne. The pair first united as TV Rock during 2004, delivering several successful remixes such as Nu Electric’s “No Matter What” and Supermode’s “Tell My Why” while simultaneously shaping their initial full-length project. By the start of 2006 the track “Flaunt It,” which featured rapper Seany B, had moved beyond its club origins to become a broad commercial triumph, reaching number one on the Australian pop listings and remaining inside the Top 50 for six months. That same release later secured both highest-selling single and best dance release trophies at the annual ARIA Music Awards presented by the Australian Recording Industry Association, yet the duo’s debut album Sunshine City underperformed commercially, an outcome partly linked to the weak chart showing of the follow-up “Bimbo Nation.” Their subsequent non-album single “The Others” restored the act to the Top 20 during the early months of 2007.
