Joey Youngman maintained an array of recording identities such as Bosco & Terell, Count Funkula, Frequent Flyers, the Girth, Mario Fabriani, and Spyro Pappadopoulos, plus additional names tied to his joint ventures, yet Wolfgang Gartner served as the vehicle for his most commercially oriented work. Through this alias he channeled vigorous, densely layered electro-house productions that diverged sharply from the restrained deep house output he released under other guises. Youngman kept his involvement hidden until 2008, after the project had already begun circulating widely in clubs. Roughly a dozen Gartner 12" singles surfaced between 2007 and 2011, accompanied by remixes for Tiësto and Sneaky Sound System, MSTRKRFT, and Britney Spears; the later compilation Back Story supplied additional background.

In September 2011 he issued his first Wolfgang Gartner album, Weekend in America, on Ultra, using the occasion to pursue his interest in rap via guest spots from Cam'ron, Jim Jones, will.i.am, and Eve together with R&B vocalist Omarion. Further singles continued to appear on Ultra in the years that followed, preceding the arrival of his second album, 10 Ways to Steal Home Plate, in 2016. Issued on his own Kindergarten label, the set included Wiley and Trina on the single "Turn Up." Three additional singles reached listeners in 2018, among them "Ching Ching," "Freak," and "The Upside Down," the last featuring JayKode.
