Biography
Valerie Broussard first surfaced in the mid-2010s with her atmospheric, moody brand of pop, as early cuts including “One of My Kind” and “A Little Wicked” circulated on file-sharing sites and slipped into commercials and television episodes, often without screen credit. By then she had already begun supplying material behind the scenes for artists such as Sam Feldt and Kashka. Her profile as a performer rose sharply in 2019 when Kygo featured her on “Think About You,” delivering her initial entry on the U.S. dance/electronic charts and sparking further successes that included the Kygo duet “The Truth” and the 2021 Illenium and Nurko track “Sideways.” Voyager, her debut EP, arrived later that year.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Broussard started writing songs there before relocating to London at age 18, where she refined the dark-edged sound she later carried back to the States and placed with Round Hill Music Publishing. Throughout the mid- to late 2010s, selections such as “A Little Wicked,” the Klergy collaboration “Start a War,” and “Cross My Heart” landed on series including Lucifer on Fox, Inhumans on ABC, and Riverdale on CW. She simultaneously co-wrote material that appeared on Sam Feldt’s 2017 album Sunrise to Sunset and Kashka’s Relax, also released that year. In October 2018 she issued the brighter single “Hold on to Me,” timed with its placement on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy.
Broussard joined Kygo’s newly launched Palm Tree Records in 2019; that March she reached the Top Ten of Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart as a featured artist on “Think About You.” The following month violinist Lindsey Stirling appeared on her track “Deeper.” Later that year her cover of “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” became the theme for the U.K. series Traces. The mid-2020 duet “The Truth” with Kygo peaked at number 11 on the dance/electronic songs chart, while a featured role on Illenium and Nurko’s “Sideways” returned her to the Top Ten in mid-2021. She extended the run with “Roots,” a Galantis collaboration that climbed to number 25 on the Dance Club Songs chart. Voyager, her first solo EP, was released in November 2021.
