Biography
Wade Imre Morissette entered the world in Ottawa, Canada, instants ahead of his twin sister Alanis. Both siblings gravitated toward music while young; Wade trained on piano during childhood and later explored guitar and djembe as a teenager. His route split from his sister’s celebrated trajectory once he turned toward yoga. His spiritually charged songs fuse pop with Sanskrit and English chant, reflecting his twin devotions to yoga and melody. Although they carry echoes of world music and new age textures, the pieces remain distinctive through their soul-stirring depth.
During college, a roommate handed Morissette the volume The Mystic Path to Cosmic Powers, an encounter that redirected his existence. He devoted the ensuing ten years to studying, practicing, and instructing yoga. On repeated journeys to India he adopted devotional yoga and commenced meditative chanting. He regards the practice as a “natural way to tune into the frequency of love,” and his musical leanings soon resurfaced. Captivated by kirtan, the ancient call-and-response form, he discovered a method for uniting his two passions, fashioning an original hybrid of exotic pop and global sounds that interweaves Sanskrit and English chants. After early performances in India, audiences informed him that his music “touched their hearts,” prompting the decision “so I decided to take my music to different yoga studios around the world.”
In 2004, Morissette accepted the role of ambassador for Lululemon, the yoga-oriented athletic apparel brand. That same year he issued his debut recording, the independently distributed Sargam Scales of Music. Backed by the Lululemon sponsorship, he launched an international tour that simultaneously showcased the apparel line and his own music. The Lululemon Yoga Pilgrimage carried him to Tokyo, Hong Kong, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and 32 North American cities throughout 2005. While traveling, his recordings reached Nettwerk Music Group CEO and yoga practitioner Terry McBride. The two met in late 2006; the following year Nettwerk released Morissette’s sophomore album, Strong as Diamonds: Om Vajra Kaya Namaha. In 2008 he delivered Maha Moha: The Great Delusion, a project created with award-winning producer David Nichtern, on the newly launched Nettwerk subsidiary Nutone (“Music to Inspire”). The record employs tabla, sitar, bansuri (bamboo flute), guitar, and harmonium, augmented by an assortment of global field recordings that include horse carriages captured in China.
Morissette intends to tour North America in 2009, with additional dates planned for Europe and Southeast Asia. His first book, Living Your Joy, is slated for publication the same year, accompanied by a series of motivational seminars alongside his concerts. He views his music as a conduit to the spirit and seeks to embed that connection within layered soundscapes and uncommon melodies. His work regularly appears on SacredSoundsRadio.com and has been profiled in prominent Canadian periodicals and television programs. Through Maha Moha: The Great Delusion and the expanding Nutone roster, Morissette aims to extend his reach beyond the territories already visited.
