Biography
From a young age, Mexican native Zayda immersed herself in song, discovering traditional Mexican music during her middle school years. Born Zayda Pena, she launched her recording career in 1995 through the independent album Enamorada. After becoming a member of Los Culpables, she relocated to Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, to prepare her next release. Issued in 1997, Zayda y los Culpables contained the hit singles "Tiro de Gracia" and "Sola." Following the appearance of Atrevete, she embraced the ranchera style and completed the album Estoy Enamorada under the guidance of producer Cuitlàhuac Delgado. Atrevete drew upon material from prominent Latin composers and carried arrangements credited to Manuel Cázares, Javier Castillo, and Carlos Martínez. She maintained her association with Balboa and Musart until 2007, when she numbered among the casualties of escalating violence within the Mexican music scene. Initially shot inside a Matamoros hotel room, she later succumbed to additional gunfire while recovering in the hospital.
