Biography
A Wake in Providence formed as an American deathcore outfit whose approach fuses punishing, breakdown-heavy hardcore passages with frigid surges of blackened symphonic metal. The group surfaced in 2010 and quickly asserted itself within the deathcore underground through confident releases such as Eternity in 2022 and I Write to You, My Darling Decay in 2024.
Chris Gonzalez on vocals and D'Andre Tyre on guitar established the project in Staten Island, New York, that same year. After two early EPs, the band delivered its first Outerloop Records full-length, Insidious: Phase II, in 2017; the album included a guest appearance by Will Ramos of Secrets Don't Sleep. Ramos departed in 2018, later becoming a member of Monument to a Memory and eventually Lorna Shore. Subsequent lineup shifts left Tyre as the only remaining original member, with the current configuration solidified around Tyre handling guitar and clean vocals, Adam Mercer on unclean vocals, Jordan Felion on guitar, and Jessie McEnneny on drums.
Mercer, previously of Entombed in the Abyss, made his recorded debut with the band in 2019 on Blvck Sun/The Blood Moon. That release included contributions from Mark Poida of Aversions Crown and CJ McMahon of Thy Art Is Murder, earned widespread praise, and drew the notice of Unique Leader Records, which signed the group in 2022. Powered by the streaming success of “Godkiller,” Eternity represented the quartet’s most focused work to date. The 2024 album I Write to You, My Darling Decay further expanded their palette, pitting sweeping strings and expansive choruses against raw screams and abrupt, neck-snapping breakdowns.
