Alejandro Chal, the Peruvian-born artist who records as A.CHAL, crafts an atmospheric brand of electronic R&B marked by vocals that alternate between sung and rapped lines while moving fluidly between English and Spanish.

When Chal was four, his family relocated from Peru to the United States and established themselves in Queens, New York. He began rapping early and soon joined a neighborhood friend in creating beats. In 2010 he moved to Los Angeles to focus on music full-time, then self-released his first EP, Ballroom Riots, in 2013; the project attracted Sony ATV, which offered him a publishing contract.

The 2015 release “Round Whippin’” gained national attention after Beats1 host Zane Lowe premiered it on his program, generating widespread critical praise by the close of that year. The song later appeared on Chal’s 2016 debut album Welcome to GAZI, which presented his hazy, nocturnal aesthetic to a broader audience.

After teaming with French producer STWO, Chal issued a series of singles leading to the June 2017 album ON GAZ; one of its tracks, the hit “Love N Hennessy,” later received a remix featuring 2 Chainz and Nicky Jam. Epic Records signed him in 2018, and his first project for the label, the Exotigaz EP, appeared later that year. In May 2020 he released the non-album single “Hollywood Love” with Gunna.
