The screamo group Across Five Aprils formed in Chattanooga, Tennessee, when Steve Taylor on vocals, Zak Towe on guitar and vocals, Jarrod Smith on guitar, Jason Barry on bass, and Drew Miller on drums first joined forces in September 2001. After circulating MP3s online and playing area shows, they tracked their debut full-length, A Tragedy in Progress, for Indianola Records and saw it surface in May 2003. New vocalist Jason Fields appeared on that record but exited by the following autumn. In March 2004, Steve Taylor, who had moved from frontman to manager, agreed to resume the vocal duties. Numerous East Coast performances followed the album’s release, leading to the fall 2004 EP Living in the Moment, which became one of Indianola’s strongest sellers. Taylor stepped away in spring 2005 to focus on his management company, which represented the band, and Brandon Mullins, formerly of Embraced, took over vocals. The band resurfaced with Collapse in July 2006, supported by dates alongside Ligeia and Chasing Victory. After signing to Victory Records, they entered the studio with producer Matt Goldman, whose credits include Underoath, As Cities Burn, and Norma Jean, to create the darker and more substantial Life Underwater, scheduled for February 2008.
