Antoinette, the Queens native who styled herself the "gangstress of rap," first surfaced on hip-hop producer Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor's compilation disc Hurby's Machine. What began as little more than a brash, tough-talking mama gradually developed into an unpredictable rapper who could sound fresh one moment, alluring the next, and openly defiant after that, her tracks balanced evenly between funk, go-go, hip-house, and jagged hardcore sampler and production snippets.
