Formed in Sweden during 1994, Apostasy specialized in keyboard-laden symphonic black metal modeled on the approach of Dimmu Borgir and Arcturus. The sudden passing of founding vocalist Stefan Peersen in 1997—attributed to a devastating brain virus—prompted guitarist Svenn-Aksel Henriksen to take over lead vocals, after which he joined forces with the lineup then in place—Daniel Nymo on guitar, Ole Jörgen Moe on bass, and Arne Ording on drums—to lay down the limited-edition Mournful Heaven E.P. the next year. Persistent personnel changes continued to hinder the band, yet it still produced two demos, 1999’s “Within the Majestic Darkness” and 2002’s “Autumn Heart,” before securing a contract with Black Mark Records. The roster had by then been completely rebuilt around vocalist Henriksen together with guitarists Inge Johansen and Tor Erik Andersen, bassist Alf Magne Andersen, and drummer Anders Faret Haave, enabling Apostasy to issue its first full-length effort, Cell 666, in early 2004.
