Biography
With a voice marked by its low, smoky timbre and commanding presence, R&B artist Baby Rose evokes the deep emotional intensity associated with Billie Holiday and Nina Simone. Having launched her solo work while still in her early twenties, she infused her 2019 debut album To Myself with a maturity that exceeded her age. Following her contribution to Dreamville’s 2020 compilation Revenge of the Dreamers III, which earned a Grammy nomination, she delivered the atmospheric Through and Through in 2023 and, the next year, the haunting Slow Burn EP with BadBadNotGood—the initial release stemming from her partnership with Secretly Canadian.
Born Jasmine Rose Wilson in Washington, D.C., she spent her formative years in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Exposed to an eclectic mix of musical styles from childhood, she began singing and composing poetry early on. A family member presented her with a piano for her ninth birthday; by age twelve her vocal ability had progressed sufficiently that a family acquaintance urged her to enter a recording studio. After her family settled in Fayetteville, she took part in local talent contests and continued developing her musical pursuits through her teenage years.
She later relocated to Atlanta to devote greater attention to her craft. There she collaborated with producer Casey Graham on her first EP, From Dusk ’Til Dawn, issued in 2017, and drew notice from established figures such as SZA and J. Cole. Shortly after opening for Ari Lennox on tour, Rose joined Lennox and Bas on Revenge of the Dreamers III, released by Dreamville Records in July 2019, which entered the Billboard 200 at number one. One month later Island Records issued her debut full-length To Myself via a licensing arrangement; written after a breakup and shaped chiefly by Tim Maxey’s production—with additional contributions from Insightful and Biako—the album appeared that August. In November the Dreamville project received a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album.
Rose maintained an active touring schedule across the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States into 2020 before enrolling in an online songwriting program at Berklee College of Music. She resurfaced in 2022 on Secretly Canadian with the single “Go,” accompanied by “Fight Club,” a track recorded with Georgia Anne Muldrow. The full album Through and Through arrived the following year, shortly after she contributed “Heavy Is the Head” to Creed III: The Soundtrack. Captured in Nashville and Los Angeles with a broader production team that included Maxey, Biako, John Scherer, D. Phelps, and DJ Dahi, the set balanced ethereal textures with candid lyricism. Before 2023 concluded, Rose issued the duet “Closer” with Destin Conrad. She then joined Canadian trio BadBadNotGood and associate Felix Fox-Pappas to create the six-song Slow Burn EP, a fusion of soul, funk, and rock that also featured Mereba and surfaced in April 2024.
