Biography
Beau Dermott, an English singer who grew up in Cheshire, England, first drew notice through a voice that soars with unusual power and through her interpretations of numbers drawn from well-known stage musicals. As a child she developed a deep fascination with Julie Andrews and turned singing songs from classic theatrical productions into a regular pastime. Her profile rose sharply after she delivered a striking rendition of “Defying Gravity,” the number from Wicked, during the 2016 edition of Britain’s Got Talent. The performance left the judging panel stunned and secured her a place in the semi-finals, where she ultimately placed fifth. Further opportunities followed: Decca Records offered her a recording contract, and Dame Vera Lynn invited her to open the celebrations for the singer’s 100th birthday at the London Palladium in 2017. Later the same year Dermott issued her debut album, Brave, which included both her version of “Defying Gravity” and the original song that supplies the record’s title.
