Biography
Big Dismal emerged from Florida as a post-grunge outfit driven by faith, crafting melodic power with lyrics centered on family, belief, and endurance. Their radio-friendly fusion of alternative and Christian rock, showcased by the 2003 breakout single “Remember (I.O.U.),” drew parallels to 12 Stones, Creed, and 3 Doors Down. After halting activity in 2004, the group resurfaced two decades later atop the CCM charts via the singles “Fly Again” and “Stay in the Fight.”
In the early 2000s, vocalist Eric Durrance, guitarist Chuck Shea, bassist Gary Sobel, and drummer Jeff Chomin formed the band. Prior to any Wind-Up involvement, Durrance had been active in Tallahassee’s local circuit; his solo work and Christian convictions caught the label’s attention, prompting him to assemble supporting musicians and adopt the name Big Dismal. The official debut album Believe arrived in May 2003, securing a Dove Award nomination thanks to the chart-topping Christian-rock hits “Reality,” “Just the Same,” and “Remember (I.O.U.).” The following year the band supplied “Rainy Day” and “Reason I Live” to the Passion of the Christ soundtrack, which received Album of the Year honors at the 2004 Dove Awards.
Shortly afterward the members parted ways, only to reunite in 2023 and release “Fly Again” and “Stay in the Fight,” both of which reached the summit of the CCM charts. A third single, “Here in My Heart,” followed in 2024.
