Biography
Big Grams unites indie electronic duo Phantogram—Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter from Greenwich, New York—with Atlanta rapper Big Boi, whose given name is Antwan Patton and who belongs to the hip-hop pair OutKast, letting every participant step beyond their usual creative boundaries to test concepts they had never pursued inside their primary groups. Big Boi first encountered Phantogram when their tracks surfaced in an online pop-up advertisement; after he shared the music publicly, the duo—longtime OutKast admirers—replied with immediate excitement. The three later crossed paths at a California festival, where Big Boi proposed a studio collaboration. Phantogram then appeared on three tracks from his second solo album, Vicious Lies & Dangerous Rumours, issued in 2012. The friendships endured, and Barthel revealed in 2014 that an EP was in development. By summer 2015 the project received its official name, Big Grams, along with word of an imminent self-titled seven-song EP that includes guest spots from Skrillex and Run the Jewels and is led by the debut single “Fell into the Sun.”
