Biography
Catherine Janice Ipsan, performing as Cat Janice, built a career as a classically trained American alt-pop singer, songwriter, and producer whose ethereal voice anchored a punchy, groove-laden sound. The Virginia native merged alt-rock, disco-pop, and EDM into an assured style whose momentum was building when a rare, aggressive cancerous tumor was diagnosed in 2022. She responded by writing songs that confronted the upheaval of surgery, chemotherapy, and the full spectrum of emotions that followed. Modern Medicine, the 2023 release housing the powerful ballads “Strawberry Morning” and “Wishing I Was You” plus the resilient dance-pop banger “Chill the fck Out,” captured that period. Later in 2023, after the cancer had spread to her lung, Janice married her boyfriend, Kyle Higginbotham. On January 19, 2024, four days after entering hospice, she issued the ebullient single “Dance Outta My Head.” The track originated from a spontaneous phrase—“Dance until you love me”—that she and her seven-year-old son sang together in the car one day. It became an international hit, reaching number one in multiple countries and securing the Robert Allen Award from the ASCAP Foundation. Cat Janice died on February 28, 2024, at the age of 31.
