Biography
Olympia, Washington's Christian Mistress challenge the area's status as the birthplace of grunge by channeling heavy metal, the dominant genre arguably undercut most by the flannel revolution. Formed in 2008, the group—guitarists Ryan McClain and Oscar Sparbel, bassist Johnny Wulf, drummer Rueben Storey, and raspy-voiced front-woman Christine Davis (ex-Buried Blood)—deliberately revive the unpolished, elemental style of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal around 1979. A 2009 demo and single first showcased this approach, drawing enthusiastic support from underground metal figures including Darkthrone's Fenriz and leading the band to 20-Buck Spin, which issued their six-song debut mini-album, Agony and Opium, in 2010.
