Biography
Christon Gray, an Ohio-based R&B singer, rapper, and producer, first surfaced in 2013 via the Christian hip-hop collective W.L.A.K. (We Live as Kings). His solo output fuses modern hip-hop and soul textures with spiritual undercurrents, opening pathways to wider audiences through projects such as The Glory Album in 2016 and its breakout track "Stop Me."
A Columbus, Ohio native, Gray entered Christian rap by founding the Elevationists with his brother Taelor Gray in 2006, an effort that produced the 2007 album The Necessary. Following his debut solo release Even with Evil with Me in 2011, he aligned with the W.L.A.K. collective, which issued its successful W.L.A.K. album in 2013. Collision Records released his second solo album, School of Roses, early in 2014, foregrounding his singular fusion of soul, pop, hip-hop, and Christian spirituality.
After signing with Kirk Franklin's Fo Yo Soul label in 2016, he delivered The Glory Album, which climbed to number five on Billboard's R&B chart and number six on the Christian chart. The single "Stop Me" achieved widespread traction through placements in HBO's Ballers, FOX's Lethal Weapon, and the film Rampage. By 2017 it had settled into regular rotation on FOX Sports programming and functioned as a theme song for several major sports teams.
Around that time Gray announced his departure from Fo Yo Soul and issued a pair of independent singles, "No Hesitation" and "Shoulda Known." He was also named Worship Leader at Christ's Church in Mason, Ohio. Late in 2017 he renegotiated with Fo Yo Soul, re-signing for the follow-up album Clear the Heir, which appeared in October 2018.
