Biography
Cuisillos, also identified at times as Cuisillos de Arturo Macías or Banda Cusillos de Arturo Macías, stand among Mexico's foremost bandas through their command of both romantic ballads and upbeat rancheras. Their signature brass-driven approach is joined by a consistent incorporation of Native American motifs that surface on album covers, in videos, and through the bandmembers' own presentations, all conveyed in an amusing yet respectful style. Arturo Macías, who performs under the name El Gran Jefe, functions as musical director and crafts most of the group's arrangements.
Based in Jalisco, the ensemble has issued the bulk of its output on the Musart label, amassing a catalog that exceeds two dozen albums. Momentum gathered after the turn of the century, propelled especially by the 2002 Latin Grammy Award for Best Banda Album given to Puras Rancheras con Banda Cuisillos, which appeared in 2001. The next release, Las Romanticas de Cuisillos from 2002, became the first to reach the Top Ten on Billboard's Regional Mexican albums chart, while Amor Gitano in 2006 earned a second Grammy nomination without securing the prize.
Peak achievement arrived with Mil Heridas in 2007, as its title track ascended to number one on the Regional Mexican Airplay chart—where no earlier single had entered the Top Ten—and simultaneously climbed to number three on the Hot Latin Tracks chart. Prior to that point only three singles had registered on the latter ranking at all: "Suavito" and "Vanidosa," both from 2004, along with "Descontrolado" from 2005, and none of them advanced past the Top 30.
