Daniel Wilson works as a singer, songwriter, and producer whose material stretches across adventurous pop and updated electro-R&B. Deep emotion runs through every track by the Ypsilanti, Michigan native, a quality rooted in the extended period he devoted to gospel choirs. Although he developed inside the church and earned the nickname “Little Luther” because his voice resembled that of Luther Vandross, his tastes soon extended past gospel and soul. Once he mastered music-production software on his own, he created early recordings that drew notice after he posted them on SoundCloud. The digital EPs Young Rubbish and Boy Who Cried Thunder, together with a 7" single that paired their lead tracks, appeared in 2014. Sinner of the Week, his third EP, arrived in 2016, the same year Wilson joined Kendrick Lamar, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Doc McKinney, and Abel Tesfaye as a credited co-writer on the Weeknd’s Top 40 U.S. and U.K. pop hit “Sidewalks.” The next year he co-wrote and performed on “Home,” a single by Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard.
