After the dissolution of the long-running death metal outfit Centinex, bassist Martin Schulman, drummer Ronnie Bergerståhl, and guitarist Johan Jansson joined forces in 2006 to launch Demonical. Bringing vocalist Ludvig Engellau into the fold, the group set about shaping a straightforward, old-school death metal style that favored crushing weight and unvarnished aggression instead of flashy technique, echoing the thrash-rooted intensity of the genre’s earliest acts.

The band issued its first full-length effort, Servants of the Unlight, through Cyclone Empire in 2007. Before the year closed, Engellau departed and Sverker Widgren stepped in as the new frontman. The following year the musicians returned to the studio, resulting in the 2009 release of their second album, Hellsworn. After a year of extensive touring, they reconvened at Necromorbus studio to record their third effort, which surfaced as Death Infernal in the summer of 2011.
