Biography
Atlanta native DIXSON operates as a flexible collaborator and solo performer chiefly within modern R&B. The vocalist, composer, arranger, producer, and multi-instrumentalist first reached national attention in 2015 as a Top 24 contestant on The Voice. He has since constructed a catalog defined by Academy Award- and Grammy-nominated work with Beyoncé as well as his own releases such as YOUNG (2018) and 004DAISY (2022). DIXSON’s shifting style advances while staying grounded in soul and gospel.
Born Darius Scott Dixson and raised in Atlanta, he developed inside the church, performing on drums and piano; by age ten his deacon father had already assigned him the responsibilities of assembling the band and choosing its material. A couple of years after completing his studies at the College of Wooster in Ohio, DIXSON entered season nine of The Voice in 2015 under the name Darius Scott. Guided by longtime influence Pharrell Williams, he interpreted material associated with Bill Withers, Usher, and Kanye West before advancing to the Top 24. He immediately began assembling material after the show, issuing the 2016 single “Anchors” with Luke Witherspoon and then further tracks that heightened expectations for his independently released debut album YOUNG in 2018. The following year positioned him prominently as a collaborator through his central songwriting and production contributions to Chance the Rapper’s The Big Day, which reached number two on the Billboard 200.
Signed to Roc Nation by 2021, DIXSON delivered the wide-ranging EP Darling, moving across post-disco R&B, Prince-style balladry, and gritty funk shot through with gospel. That November Beyoncé released “Be Alive,” a song she and DIXSON wrote and produced together for the film King Richard; it earned a Grammy nomination for Best Song Written for Visual Media and an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Extending the partnership, DIXSON co-wrote “Virgo’s Groove” and “Pure/Honey” for Renaissance in 2022. After that album topped the Billboard 200 and before it claimed the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album, he issued his second album, 004DAISY, which contained slow-jam duets with Tinashe and Sevyn Streeter plus a feature from Vic Mensa, another artist who has drawn on DIXSON’s writing and production abilities. Still with Roc Nation, DIXSON returned the next year with “Sweeter.”
