Biography
Drawn to the styles of Missy Elliott, Brandy, and Frank Ocean, Jayla Darden shapes a laid-back strain of contemporary R&B that carries pop appeal while she herself handles production on most of her tracks. After posting early recordings online, she signed with Interscope and delivered the Onto Something EP in 2019. A pair of additional singles followed on the major label before she shifted focus toward supporting other performers, only to reemerge in December 2024 with Momentum, her fifth EP and the first released independently under her own production.
A native of Detroit, she began singing in church choir, later adding guitar and keyboards while mastering digital audio workstations for production. At fifteen she relocated to Atlanta, completed high school ahead of schedule, and enrolled in audio engineering courses. Her SoundCloud uploads, a run of self-released tracks, and the compact EPs 118, Ideas, Vol. 1, and Ideas, Vol. 2—all posted between 2016 and 2018—drew Interscope’s notice. Toward the close of the decade she settled in Los Angeles, introduced herself on the major label with the single “Key Mercedes,” and soon issued Onto Something, a seven-track set containing the gentle title track alongside the alluring “Sweating Me.” Two further Interscope singles appeared in 2020; after parting ways with the label she spent several years writing and producing for outside artists until Momentum, a seven-track collection described as mellow yet emphatic, arrived as a self-released project.
