Dounia, a vocalist, composer, and fashion model capable of veering abruptly from intimate introspection to casual self-praise, has established her identity after amassing an online audience during adolescence. Her initial extended play, Intro To, appeared in 2017, after which she has polished an unassuming but confident blend of rhythm and blues with hip-hop through further extended plays, the complete album The Scandal released in 2019, along with numerous individual tracks spanning from her debut effort "East Coast Hiding" to "Lavender" issued in 2021.

Born and raised across Morocco and Queens as Dounia Tazi, she began composing and capturing vocals while attending secondary school, coinciding with her initial opportunity to pursue musical interests. Positive responses to a critical song aimed at a former romantic interest provided motivation. Through Instagram she gained recognition via advocacy for physical self-acceptance and societal fairness, advancing her musical presence in 2017 by launching with the January single "East Coast Hiding." Nine months afterward came Intro To, a brief and straightforward extended play that included the follow-up single "Shyne." June 2018 saw the release of "Avant-Garde," simultaneously among her most controlled and forceful numbers, which later appeared on her second extended play The Avant-Garden. "How I See It" and "Everything's a Joke" served as two further standalone tracks concluding her 2018 releases and paving the way for "ROYAL," her opening single of 2019. In May she delivered Not Good for the Ego as her third extended play, followed just eight weeks later by the album The Scandal, which incorporated a Moroccan Arabic passage by her rap persona Moroccan Doll. During 2020 she remained highly active, issuing a steady stream of singles together with the extended plays Popping in the Abyss and Natural Chaotic, before proceeding in 2021 to "Lavender," among her singles leaning most toward pop structures.
