The California pop-rap trio Drop City Yacht Club came together informally during 2009 after an introduction between rapper A Wolf and producer Kristo. Their initial studio collaboration bore the name the Freshmen. Kristo's shift toward greater emphasis on his own rapping prompted the addition of beatmaker THX to complete the lineup, an artist previously responsible for tracks by Erykah Badu, E-40, Snoop Dogg, and numerous other prominent figures. With this configuration in place, the group pursued a sound positioned between the Beastie Boys and the Beach Boys, blending gritty hip-hop elements with echoes of California's bright pop traditions. Under their original moniker the Freshmen, they distributed material digitally, securing placements such as the track "Hello There" in motion pictures. The act adopted the Drop City Yacht Club designation in January 2013 upon inking a deal with a subsidiary of A&M Records. Their debut release, the catchy "Crickets" that included a contribution from Jeremih, arrived alongside an elaborately produced clip recast as a playfully retro dating program.
